Our group is going to present the topic of week 11: Playing Games, Sim(ulating) Worlds and Having Divine Powers. We have chosen to highlight and discuss the the second reading of this week, ‘As We Become Machines – Corporealized Pleasures In Video Games’ from The Video Game Theory Reader by Mark J.P. Wolf & Bernard Perron (eds).
Although there are two main foci within this reading, we would like to present the first focus, how the game space is being the ‘Third Place’. We will discuss the notion of how games provide the more real cyberspace for gamers by the development of video games. They are the dimensional improvement of graphics, the use of first person point of view for gamers and the sensory immersion for games. With the examples of these developments, the boundaries of the screen are being removed and that is why the writers commented that human and technology are merging together and having a new cyborgian relationship.

After the presentation, I found that the requirement of realism in video game has been reinforced. As both Anthea and I have used some examples in helping to illustrate the new developments of video game, our classmates have shared their feeling towards the Wii. Since Wii has highly increased the ‘real’ feeling for gamers, Wii is no longer only a video game but it can also provide a real experience for gamers. The 3D graphical design and mimicking the action like boxing or bowling in our daily life are blurring the boundaries between the game world and gamers. Some classmates have also talked about Wii game is harder to play and more exciting than normal video game as it really relys on the gamers’ body action. Because of the computer comes to feel like an organic extension of gamers’ consciousness due to the continuous flow with the avatars. That can also be referred to the ‘cyborg’ as gamers are mostly unaware about the shift of their relationship in which their real life experiences have been combined with technology.
An improvement is needed for our presentation as well. Although we have not prepared a discussion part, our classmates have still openly shared their experiences in playing video games. And it would be better if we have arranged some questions before.
